HAVE YOUR SAY about the proposed changes to the County Divisions

This is an important message from your Parish Council

Dear Parishioner

The Boundary Commission has recently published draft recommendations on the new electoral arrangements for Nottinghamshire County Council. As part of the process, they are asking for the views of local people and it’s important that the parishioners of Oxton have their say. The draft recommendations place Oxton in the Blidworth division but your Parish Council very strongly believes that Oxton would be better placed in a division alongside its neighbouring villages to which it has strong affinity i.e. Epperstone, Gonalston, Thurgarton and Hoveringham. On the current draft proposals these villages will be placed together in the Southwell division.

Your first reaction may be that it doesn’t affect you – but it does – because Oxton would be put into a division with a large urban area which has no common identity with Oxton and that could well mean that both money and support is likely to flow towards the much larger settlement at Oxton’s expense. The recent restructuring of the Newark and Sherwood electoral wards placed Oxton in the Dover Beck Ward along with Epperstone, Gonalston, Thurgarton, Hoveringham and Caythorpe. This is a beneficial grouping of similar villages which the Parish Council feels should be replicated in the restructuring of the County Council divisions thus retaining a County Councillor who understands and will fight for and support the smaller communities.

The Parish Council will be responding to object strongly to this new proposal which would put Oxton in the Blidworth division and is urging all Oxton parishioners to review the proposals and make your views known to the Boundary Commission. The more responses that are received from Oxton, the more the Boundary Commission is likely to pay attention to what we say. Please note, you have until 10th August 2015 to respond.
