Chairman’s Blog May 2013

Nora Armstrong, N&SDC Councillor:
I am sad to report that Nora passed away on Monday 15th April. Nora was always a great supporter of Oxton and for many years offered her wealth of knowledge and assistance whenever the Parish needed it. She will be sadly missed. Our condolences go to her family. For friends and colleagues who wish to pay their respects, there is a memorial service at  Kelham Hall on Tuesday 7th May at 1:00pm. I will be attending and have four spare spaces in my car. Please call me if you would like to attend and need a lift.

Flood Mitigation Measures Update: After many months of frustrating discussions regarding flood defence improvements, Newark & Sherwood District Council (NSDC) have commissioned JBA Consulting, a specialist hydrology and hydraulics consultancy, to produce proposals for various small-scale works re flood mitigation measures and are proposing to hold an exhibition at Oxton for the residents to view, ask questions etc. about the suggested improvements. The date is to be announced but will be posted on MyOxton community website and on the PC notice-board.

County Councillor Andy Stewart:  Andy, our County Councillor, has decided to retire and therefore will not be standing at the 2nd May elections. Andy has been a great supporter of Oxton for many years and I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the village to express our thanks for all his help and hard work. UPDATE: Congratulations go to ROGER JACKSON who has  succeeded Andy as Oxton’s representative at County level.

Our new County Councillor will be elected at the local elections on May 2nd. The results will be posted on the PC website and the noticeboard.

Oxton Village Green: As you may know the PC has responsibility for the grassed area between Main Street and Elmcroft which, some might say, could be considered to be our “village green”. I believe we could make more of this area with a wild flower bed acting as a haven for wildlife, more bench seating and a traditional village sign depicting Oxton’s heritage, history and culture. The village plan, published in Oct 2011, showed there is great interest in a formal village green which would be an asset to the village and its residents. I plan to kick start this project over the summer and look at the opportunities available.

2013/14 PRECEPT: The PC has agreed, for yet another year, to keep the precept at £8500. You may notice on your Council Tax Bill there appears to be a 3.9% increase. This is not the case; it’s just the way it is calculated.

Kind regards..…….Jill Jones
