Oxton Village Hall plays host to a fashion show on Wednesday 15th February at 7pm.
The event is organised by local girl Lorna Flint, with all proceeds in aid of the Childreach International charity, as part of fundraising that Lorna and her boyfriend Ben are undertaking on the way to climbing to the ‘roof of Africa’, Kilimanjaro, the world’s highest freestanding mountain, a taxing 8-day trek up 5,895 breathtaking metres.
As Lorna explains:
After starting at Leeds University in September 2011, I was immersed in opportunity. RAG, standing for Raise And Give, stood out immediately. As an exciting charity-based society, RAG offered ways in which people, potentially with no experience of fundraising, could volunteer. It was my chance to give something back.
When I saw “Climb Mt Kili for Kids” I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to try to improve the lives of many children and as a challenge of a lifetime: climb the world’s highest freestanding mountain!
So far Ben and I have done hours of bucketing (four hours at a time, with little success), sold doughnuts, held coffee mornings, done stand-up bingo, cake sales, taken part in Movember and requested donations; it was never going to be easy.
The climb will involve eight days of trekking and a day visiting the school in Tanzania where the money will be going (one aspect that I cannot wait for). I know that all of the hard work through fundraising will be so worth it when I see the smiles of the young children receiving the benefits of our efforts.
When I reach the summit, it will be a feeling that no one can describe: true exhilaration and satisfaction, not only on a personal level, but much much wider! That’s providing I make it back without falling off the edge, catching an exotic disease, dying from food poisoning, being stung by a lethal bug or collapsing from altitude sickness! I will let you know how it goes 😉
